Children & Youth Services Librarian Job Description Position Description Organizes and leads library programs for pre-kindergarten, elementary, and teen library users. Performs professional library services in assisting library patrons in the selection and use of library materials. Also participates in short and long range planning for children and general library programs. Hours of Work Full-time, hourly *Must be willing to work evenings and Saturdays Primary Function Plans, organizes, directs and manages all aspects of Children’s Library services in conformity with the policies established by the Library Board of Trustees and the Library Director. Qualifications, Education, Experience, Skills Required - Minimum of High School Diploma - Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library functions - Administration skills - A working knowledge of computers and computer applications - Considerable knowledge of the needs and abilities of children - Good oral and written communication skills - Ability to create and administer activities and programs for children and teens - Considerable ability to establish and maintain working relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, boards, volunteers, governmental bodies along with the general public - Has a current driver’s license with insured personal vehicle Specific Duties - Develops and conducts programs for children, teens, and parents which encourage reading, viewing, and listening skills and the use of the library facility and materials. - Coordinates and develops programs to encourage involvement from local school students - Serves as a liaison to after school groups, daycares, pre-schools, and local school system - Assists in promoting library use, especially programs and services for youth - Assists in developing children’s library policy - Selects materials for children’s library - Maintains and evaluates children’s collection - Develops and oversees Teen Advisory Board - Assists in finding volunteers for children’s library - Must attend in-service trainings, webinars, etc to maintain a certain number of continuing education hours each year - Directs the daily operation of the Children’s Library and Teen Space to ensure the highest quality service is given in coordination with library policy - Maintains working knowledge of contemporary issues, trends and technology in the library profession by attending workshops, professional meetings, trainings, and reading of current literature. - Participates in job related activities of professional and community organizations - 3rd in Command – Assumes responsibility of all staff, public, and library building in the absence of Director and Assistant Director - Performs duties in other library areas and participates in library special projects as needed or as requested by the Library Director. - Must have reliable transportation and able to travel to trainings, programs, etc |
